Once you have drafted and revised your paper so that your argument is organized, clear and meets your objectives for the assignment, you are ready to polish the text by editing and proofreading. Writing Center consultants are available to help you correct typos and improve sentence-level grammar and punctuation, word choice and formatting. In addition, our center provides dozens of style manuals and grammar guides to assist with editing.
Our goal is to help you learn the basics of grammar and punctuation by showing you how to express your ideas clearly. Your participation is essential; we won't "fix" your paper, but we will collaborate with you to produce a polished final draft. (We'll even show you how to use a semi-colon!)
When you need assistance during these final stages of completing a paper or project, you should schedule an appointment (262-3144) and bring your most recently revised draft and any other materials that specify the style standards required for your project or paper. These may include:
- assignment-specific handouts and/or syllabus
- the style or grammar handbook you prefer to use (if you have one)
- other papers or assignments that have professor feedback on sentence-level editing errors
